Elemiah

“The hidden hand that steadies the tiller when no shore is in sight.”

The Angel

Elemiah is glossed as the Hidden God or the God concealed, and in the fourth station of Aries — from fifteen to twenty degrees — it governs the perilous work of voyages, discoveries, and the reversal of fortune. The name unites a root of concealment with the divine -iah, so that the angel becomes the unseen guide behind visible journeys, the providence that acts precisely where it cannot be perceived.

The tradition makes Elemiah a protector of travellers, especially those upon the sea, and by extension of all who venture into the unknown in search of livelihood or truth. It grants success in enterprise, the discovery of hidden traitors, and relief from the torments of a troubled mind — for the same power that steers a ship through darkness can steer a soul through its own confusion. Those it favours are marked by an industrious, questing temperament and a desire to know the causes of things. In the symmetry of the Shem, Elemiah stands opposite the Goetic marquis Samigina, who teaches the liberal sciences and gives account of the souls of the dead; where the demon reports on what is lost, the angel guards what is still in passage.
