He kindles love between men and women, and lays bare what is hidden.
The Spirit
Sitri — spelled also Bitru or Sytry in the manuscript variants — is the twelfth spirit of the Ars Goetia and holds the rank of prince. The grimoire gives him one of the more composite and vivid appearances of the catalogue: a leopard’s face and the wings of a griffin, changing at the operator’s command into a very beautiful human form. This shift from beast to fair figure suits his office, for he is chiefly the spirit of the Ars Goetia associated with the enflaming of desire.
Among the seventy-two he stands as the classic officer of love and attraction, and the tradition remembers him almost wholly for that province.
Office
According to the Goetia, Sitri enflames men and women with love toward one another, and causes them to show themselves openly, casting off concealment. His office is the arousing of desire and the removal of shame or secrecy between lovers — a narrow but well-defined province, which sets him among the spirits sought for matters of the heart rather than for learning, war, or treasure.
