A terrible king, who comes in wrath and must be met with courtesy.
The Spirit
Beleth — spelled also Bileth or Bilet — is the thirteenth spirit of the Ars Goetia and one of its mighty and terrible kings. The grimoire treats him with unusual caution, warning that he arrives in great fury, heralded by trumpets and by a riotous host, so that the operator was advised to hold a hazel wand and to observe strict ceremony lest the spirit prove ungovernable. Of all the seventy-two he is among those whose summoning the text surrounds with the sternest counsel, a measure of the dread the tradition attached to his coming.
Once received with the proper honours — the compilers stress the courtesy owed to a king — his fury is said to abate, and he treats with the operator as the province of his office allows.
Office
The Goetia holds that Beleth procures the love of any man or woman toward another, so long as the operator desires it, until the purpose is accomplished. His office is thus, like that of several spirits near him in the catalogue, the compelling of affection — but it is joined in his case to a reputation for wrath and difficulty that set his summoning apart, making him a king approached for love yet feared for his temper.
