“The steady hand keeps its place and its bread.”
The Angel
Menadel is rendered “the Adorable God” or “God the honourable,” a name of worth and constancy, closed with the suffix -el, “God.” Its virtue attaches to the dignity of labour and the honour of remaining faithfully at one's post, and so it is counted among the angels most concerned with the ordinary sustaining work by which a life is held together.
Governing the final pentad of Virgo, from twenty-five to thirty degrees, Menadel presides over vocation, employment, and the retention of one's station. Its classical office is to help a worker keep their place, to recall exiles and the absent to their homes, and to free those bound in servitude or unjust captivity; equally it is invoked to recover lost objects and to learn the truth about those far away. The virtue it bestows is steadfastness in work — the love of one's calling, diligence without ambition's fever, and the quiet honour of duty well kept. Under its influence the anxious labourer is settled, the wanderer is drawn home, and the bonds of unjust confinement are loosened. It is called upon by those who fear the loss of their livelihood, by the homesick and the exiled, and by any who would be restored to their rightful place. Comparative practice pairs Menadel with the Goetic prince Stolas, teacher of astronomy and the virtues of herbs and precious stones; where Stolas imparts the secret knowledge of nature, Menadel imparts the faithful constancy that puts such knowledge to honest and enduring use.
