Chavakiah

“The broken house is mended at the shared table.”

The Angel

Chavakiah is read as “God who gives joy” or “the God who brings gladness,” its root touching the sense of embrace and gathering — ḥāvaq, “to enfold, to draw together” — sealed with the divine suffix -iah. It is the angel of reconciliation, of the arms opened again after estrangement, and its joy is specifically the joy of restored kinship.

Ruling the fifth pentad of Virgo, from twenty to twenty-five degrees, Chavakiah governs the domestic sphere: the peace of families, the healing of quarrels, and the just division of inheritances. Its classical office is to reconcile those who have fallen out — spouses, siblings, parents and children, friends divided by grievance — and to restore concord where discord has taken root. The virtue it bestows is a peace-making spirit joined to filial devotion: the gift of loving one's own, of forgiving old wounds, and of preferring harmony to the bitter satisfaction of being right. Under its influence lawsuits among kin are settled, testaments are shared without rancour, and the household is knit again into one body. It is invoked by those who would mend a broken family, by mediators, and by any who long for reconciliation with someone estranged. In the comparative scheme Chavakiah answers the Goetic marquis Marchosias, a fierce and warlike spirit who fights faithfully for his commander; where Marchosias is strong in combat, Chavakiah is strong in peace, winning by embrace what the warrior wins by strife.
