“The cooled temper rules more surely than the raised hand.”
The Angel
Lehahiah is traditionally translated “the Clement God” or “God the merciful,” a name whose office is the quenching of wrath. Its root carries the sense of flame or burning — the lahaṭ of anger — brought under the sway of the divine suffix -iah, so that the very fire of indignation is turned toward mercy. It is the angel that cools the heat of temper and reconciles the ruler with the ruled.
Governing the fourth pentad of Virgo, from fifteen to twenty degrees, Lehahiah presides over obedience, discipline, and the harmony between authority and those under it. Its classical office is to calm anger — both the wrath of the powerful against subordinates and the resentment of subordinates against their masters — and to secure the fidelity that holds a household or a kingdom together. The virtue it bestows is a tempered spirit: patience under provocation, loyalty freely given, and the grace to submit without servility or to command without cruelty. Under its influence the choleric are stilled and the rebellious reconciled, so that peace is kept not by force but by mutual regard. It is invoked by those who serve difficult superiors, by leaders who would be obeyed through love rather than fear, and by any whose anger threatens to master them. Comparative practice pairs Lehahiah with the Goetic earl and duke Furfur, a spirit of tempests and burning love; where Furfur raises storms and inflames the heart, Lehahiah stills the tempest of the temper and restores calm.
