Ieiazel

“The prison door swings wide, and the mourner learns to sing.”

The Angel

Ieiazel is translated “God who gladdens” or “the God who rejoices,” its root carrying the sense of gladness and consolation, sealed with the suffix -el, “God.” It is the angel of deliverance and comfort, the bringer of relief to the imprisoned and of solace to the grieving, and its gladness is the specific joy of a burden set down at last.

Ruling the fourth pentad of Libra, from fifteen to twenty degrees, Ieiazel presides over liberation, consolation, and the arts — especially the arts of letters, printing, and the making of books. Its classical office is to free captives and to lift the spirits of the afflicted, turning mourning into music and despair into creative flowering; it favours writers, artists, and all who transmute suffering into beauty. The virtue it bestows is consoled joy joined to inspiration — the resilience that finds, at the bottom of grief, a wellspring of expression, and the freedom that follows release from confinement. Under its influence the imprisoned are delivered, the sorrowful are comforted, and the artist's block is loosened into fluent work. It is invoked by the bereaved, by those who feel trapped in body or circumstance, and by any who would turn their sorrow into something made and shared. In the comparative scheme Ieiazel answers the Goetic earl Raum, a thieving spirit who destroys cities and dignities and stirs love; where Raum tears down and steals away, Ieiazel restores and consoles, giving back in joy what loss has taken.
