Essence

Aleph is the first letter and the silent one. It carries no sound of its own — only the breath that precedes speech, the opening of the throat before any word is committed. In this silence the Kabbalah hears the whole of revelation: tradition says that at Sinai Israel heard only the aleph of Anokhi, "I," and that this soundless instant contained everything that followed. As the first of the three mother letters it is Air, the mediating breath that holds Fire and Water in balance, the reconciler standing between every pair of opposites.

Its pictograph is the ox, the patient strength that pulls the plough of creation, and its name shades into aluph, master and chief. The glyph itself is a lesson in unity: an upper yod and a lower yod joined by a diagonal vav — waters above and waters below bound by a connecting nail — whose parts sum to twenty-six, the number of the four-lettered Name. Aleph is the one that contains the many, the echad of "the Lord is One," the number before division has begun.

On the Tree it is the first path, running from Kether to Chokmah — the first current out of the Crown, pure potential leaping into wisdom before form exists to catch it. Its trump is The Fool, the zero that contains every number, stepping off the cliff on the strength of breath alone. Everything the alphabet will spell is folded inside this letter the way the journey is folded inside the Fool.
