Essence
Bet is the house, and it is where everything we can read begins: the Torah opens not with aleph but with bet — Bereshit, "in the beginning." The sages noticed that the letter is closed on three sides and open only toward what follows, teaching that we may inquire forward into creation but not behind it, into what preceded. Creation starts at two, not one, because manifestation requires a container — a dwelling the infinite consents to be housed in. Bet is also the first letter of berakhah, blessing, which is why the world is said to begin in blessing rather than in judgement.
As the number two, bet introduces duality: self and other, above and below, the first wall that makes an inside and an outside. It is a double letter, sounded hard or soft, and the Sefer Yetzirah hangs on it the pair of wisdom and folly — the two ways any dwelling can be kept. Its planet is Mercury, mind and speech, the faculty that builds houses of meaning out of raw perception.
On the Tree it is the twelfth path, from Kether to Binah — the Crown pouring itself toward Understanding, the first act of deliberate construction. Its trump is The Magician, who stands in his hut of tools and draws power down through a directed will: the breath of Aleph put to work inside four walls.
