Kether · Crown

Before the first thought there was a wanting to think, and that wanting had no name — so we crowned it in silence.

Essence

Kether is the Crown, the first stirring of the Unmanifest into being. Above it lie the three veils of negative existence — Ain, Ain Soph, Ain Soph Aur — the limitless nothing out of which even limitlessness is drawn. Kether is the single point where that boundless dark first consents to become something, the seed of all number before number has divided into two. It is called the “First Swirlings,” the Primum Mobile that sets every wheel beneath it turning, and yet it turns nothing directly; it simply is, and everything else falls out of that fact like light from a struck flame.

To contemplate Kether is to contemplate pure existence stripped of all attribute. Nothing here can be described except by negation, for description belongs to the lower spheres where things have edges. The mystic who reaches this height finds not an object of vision but the annihilation of the seer in the seen. It is unity so total that the self dissolves, and what remains is the bare, radiant fact of I Am.

On the Tree

Kether crowns the summit of the Middle Pillar, the pillar of equilibrium and consciousness, holding perfect balance between the poles it is about to generate. Nothing stands above it but the veils of nothingness; below it, along the central column, lies the abyss and then Tiphareth, the heart that mirrors the Crown. Three paths radiate from this point: The Fool descends to Chokmah on the right, the pure breath of spirit; The Magician descends to Binah on the left; and The High Priestess falls straight down the middle to Tiphareth, the beam of light that will one day be remembered as the way home.

In Tarot

The four Aces belong to Kether — the root of Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles, each an undivided gift of its element before it has begun to unfold into experience. As the source of all, Kether owns no single planetary trump; it is the point from which every card ultimately proceeds. In the descending lightning-flash of the Tree, the Aces are the first cause of the pip cards, the elemental fire held before it is struck.
