Hariel

“The clear window and the honest instrument are one prayer.”

The Angel

Hariel is rendered God the Creator, the -el suffix joining a root of purity and making to the divine act of origination. In the third station of Gemini — ten to fifteen degrees — it governs purification and the sciences, presiding over the union of clarity of soul with clarity of intellect. Its creation is the fashioning of clean things: unpolluted thought, honest method, and the useful inventions that arise when a purified mind turns its attention to the workings of nature.

The tradition makes Hariel the patron of the sciences and the arts, and especially of those who seek God through the study of creation, finding in the order of things a reflection of their Maker. It grants sentiments of piety, a purity of morals, and the ingenuity that produces useful discoveries and new methods. Those under its influence are drawn to the exact and the practical, are moderate in their habits, and turn away from impious company. It is a fitting close to this first arc of the seventy-two — a return, in the register of knowledge, to the creative impulse with which Vehuiah began. Hariel answers the Goetic duke Eligos, whose foresight in matters of war and skill in winning the favour of lords is here transfigured into the foresight of the researcher and the winning clarity of a mind at peace with what it studies.
