“Justice is only mercy that has learned to keep its balance.”
The Angel
Mebahel means God the Preserver, or the God who guards and delivers, the -el suffix binding the office of protection to the divine source. In the second station of Gemini — five to ten degrees — it governs justice, truth, and liberty, standing as the advocate of the oppressed and the vindicator of the innocent. Its preservation is specifically the shielding of those who have no other shield: the wrongly accused, the captive, the powerless caught in the machinery of the powerful.
The tradition credits Mebahel with delivering the innocent from persecution and with confounding the schemes of false witnesses, so that truth prevails where deceit had seemed to hold the field. It grants a love of justice for its own sake and inclines its favourites toward the defence of the weak and the rescue of the wronged. Those under its patronage are drawn to law, to advocacy, and to every labour that liberates the captive; they possess a sober and truthful temperament that recoils from oppression. Mebahel answers the Goetic marquis Leraje, the spirit of strife and battle whose province is contention and the wounds of war; in the angelic register that same martial energy is turned to the defence of the just, so that combativeness becomes the courage to plead an unpopular truth.
